Fritz Lang’s penultimate silent film, Spione [Spies], is a flawlessly constructed labyrinthine spy thriller. Hugely influential, Lang’s famous passion for meticulous detail combines with masterful story-telling and editing skills to form a relentless tale of intrigue, espionage, and blackmail. An international spy ring, headed by Haghi (Rudolf Klein-Rogge), uses technology, threats, and murder to obtain government secrets. As master spy, president of a bank, and music hall clown, Haghi leads several lives using instruments of modern technology to spearhead a mad rush for secrets — secrets that assert his power over others. Setting in stone for the first time many elements of the modern spy thriller, Spione perhaps represents the zenith of Lang's silent artistry. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Spione in a Dual Format (Blu-ray + DVD) edition.

Kingdom of Heaven An epic film set in Europe and the Middle East, Kingdom Of Heaven follows one man's struggle to better himself and the world around him. Orlando Bloom stars as Balian, a French blacksmith who is mourning the deaths of his wife and baby when his estranged nobleman father (Liam Neeson) arrives and asks him to join the Crusades in Jerusalem. Mindful that conducting the Lord's work will help him atone for his sins, Balian agrees and embarks on the perilous journey. Along the way, he reveals his gifts of inherent goodness and fair treatment of all human beings. Upon reaching Jerusalem, a city where his meagre beginnings no longer matter, Balian earns respect and fealty while secretly courting the capricious wife of the ruthless Guy de Lusignan (Marton Csokas) who seeks a way to destabilise the uneasy Christian-Muslim truce brokered by King Baldwin (Edward Norton) and wage war against his religious enemy... Director Ridley Scott bring the scale of his previous epic Gladiator to this film while confronting hundreds of years of religious conflict. At times controversial in both its content and production difficulties, populated by an all-star cast and held together by a sterling central performance from Orlando Bloom, Kingdom Of Heaven is a multi-faceted classic of a humble man who chooses his fate, instead of accepting the fate given to him at birth.
Originally banned by the British Board of Film Censors for being a ‘very sordid story in very sordid surroundings’, Love on the Dole, was made in 1941 at a time when social conditions had been radically changed by the Second World War. Set in 1930s Salford, at the height of the Great Depression, young Harry Hardcastle (Geoffrey Hibbert, In Which We Serve) and his sister Sally (Deborah Kerr, The King and I) fall victim to poverty and unemployment, meaning they need to make difficult decisions to survive. Although the film deals with the Depression, mass unemployment, poverty and riots, the film retains positivity by reinforcing the view that Britain and its working classes had survived incredible hardships and would conquer anything which faced them. Peppered with references to a new start and a better future, where “everybody lends a hand” the film is optimistic in its nod to the liberal democracy Britain had retained despite the war. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Walter Greenwood the film was much-praised by critics upon its release. Extras: New High Definition transfer Our Film (Harold French, 1942): Enthralling propaganda film contrasting the Russian home front with the British The Call for Arms (Brian Desmond Hurst, 1940): Government sponsored film about life at a munitions factory Island People (Paul Rotha, 1940): a film surveying of aspects of the British way of life, as seen through French eyes Illustrated booklet with new writing and full film credits
Three years after The Gospel According to Matthew, Pier Paolo Pasolini resumed his series of classical adaptations with a savage, highly personal take on Sophocles’ ancient Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex [Edipo Re]. As his first colour feature, Oedipus Rex makes brilliant use of wildly alternating Moroccan landscapes to transpose collective myth into a particular vision that is at once tender, sensual, and wholly unsparing. The film is divided into three sections set in different eras. The opening takes place in 1920s Italy, and recounts a birth that echoes that of the director himself, the product of a beautiful bourgeoise’s affair with a military officer. The mid section depicts a time “outside of history” — it is here that the myth of Oedipus (portrayed by Franco Citti of Accattone and Coppola’s The Godfather), one of patricide and incest, plays out opposite the young man’s mother/lover (Silvana Mangano). An epilogue shot on the streets of present-day Bologna finds Oedipus playing his flute for a bustling citizenry. With its kinetic handheld camerawork and strikingly primeval costumes, Pasolini’s film rattles its art-genre framework in the enduring quest to exorcise repressive emotional forces. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Oedipus Rex for the very first time on Blu-ray, in a Dual Format (Blu-ray + DVD) edition, and in a standalone DVD edition.
